How do you design your quilts I get asked often?????

I have no idea, they just happen, some times I dream an idea, I see something that triggers a memory, Im doing some thing and think this would make a great wee quilt????

This morning it happened when I was ironing LOL  But not ironing any thing some very very old delicate linen handkerchiefs that were given to women after the war in OZ and NZ when you wanted to say a big thank you but they had most things it was these beautiful fragile (but they weren’t they were made from fine linen so very strong)  2 weeks ago 3 boxes came in to the shop still sealed but rather battled scared  the handkerchiefs still pinned, surprising there were no stains from the pins but every hanky was covered in storage yellow spots,  I brought them home as I could not bear to see these little treasures chucked out,  I was brutal with the soaking I used a strong bleach and left them for nearly two weeks soaking and this morning washed them in the machine in a fabric bag.

This is were my idea for the following wee quilt to be started ironing these little t

Now the quilt begins, My conscience Jimmy Cricket is saying I thought no more new quilts!!!!!!

I was thinking Little Dear Jane blocks while ironing but when I went down to get them I found the patterns but not the blocks in the draw I pulled BUT right on top were

THESE

THESE!!!!!!!!!!!   I made these many years ago for a quilt by Sue Daley called Chelsea that never made it to the finish line as I lost the pattern.

OK now how will I make up these wee blocks to make them all the same size as they range from 10inch to nearlly 11inchs and I do not want to cut them all the same size, I make each wee hankie in to a quilt as you go. I found

Kimono soft pale aqua back ground with a blue thread running through it to make shadow flowers.

1st one of my projects for 17 Ufosin 2017 challenge

My 3rd project has begone!!!! Memory To All Mothers In War. How quickly this year is going because of my deadlines with Meredith’s Challenge.  Im trying to keep up with one project each 21 days and so far its working, when I have time in the day time I work on them, my evening are usually hand work, so  I can sit and relax and not worry about a deadline or time.

This quilt was started in PNG 20 years ago!!!!! I made the centre put it on points then added the first triangle then it was packed away for years as I did not know how to add the purple fabric as it was cut on the bias and kept stretching so much so I finally packed it away. years later I added those purple triangles and the corners to with the fans make it in to a square. Then about 18 months ago I made up the final borders with appliqué   Background is a soft aqua Kimono which is 100% pure wool. a very very fine wool fabric and so lovely to work with, appliqué is cotton and silk.

My 3rd Project for 17Ufosin2017 I call this a memory to all war mothers. Because the purple kimono fabric is from WW11 and was patched and patched my be 100 times as the mother could not afford a new one. Times are always difficult for women and children every were when their countries are at war.

Unpicked Kimono patched and patched to make a square backing for my memorial quilt to all women in war.

Unpicked Kimono I had to join  and join  to make a square backing for my memorial quilt to all women in war.  Im really doing patchwork with this backing LOL This Kimono is indgo rice paste set and very old and beautiful.

Well it started now my quilting challenge for 2017. 1st day of 2017 I started pulling and finding some of the 17 UFO’s I have chosen  to work on this year !

Sara Jeans quilt, were I took up the challenge

Sara Jeans quilt, were I took up the challenge

This quilt started out as a baby cot in Jan 2015 and as I was making the centre I realised it was just NOT Practical as a baby quilt, those centre 5blocks are made of felt pieces and would not stand up to constant washing that a baby quilt would require, so I let it keep growing, but then life happen and it was shelved, in Dec 2016 Meredith threw out this challenge and my mojo for quilting was back and life in general was steady.

Sunday 1st of Jan saw me pulling quilt pieces out ready to start on the 2nd of Jan.    First I finished machine appliquing around the sheep,  I have done trapunto quilting as I machine appliquéd them on!!!!!!!

Back of machine appliqued sheep

Back of machine appliquéd sheep cutting away the backing fabric and wadding and just leaving the sheep as trapunto

to make the sheep look rounder, fatter, and jolly.  Worst part was cutting the fabric and wadding around the sheep at the back, not fun at all as I was scared I was going to cut the front fabric.  Then this border had two wee Blue-Work  blocks added either end and sewn to the rest of the quilt,

Closer view of those dancing sheep LOL

Closer view of those dancing sheep LOL finally the quilt top was finished.

Top close up of the Bluework blocks.

These delightful wee Bluework blocks were made for me in a swap in 2

These delightful wee Bluework blocks were made for me in a swap by quilters all over Australia around 2007 and Ive use 7 of 12 here .

then Murphy’s law struck and I could not find the border strips to finish of that last addition????  It took me 2 days and then I found it when looking for Christmas paper to store till next Christmas LOL.  Quilt top was finally finished 11.30pm on the 4th Jan 2017

5th of Jan I pushed two large foldaway tables together and put the backing wadding and quilt top together to bast.

Taped to the tables ready for basting.

Taped to the tables ready for basting.

And started basting,  6th not much done as I was helping DGD make a shoulder bag for her girlfriends birthday gift.  7th sat down to the table at 6.30am and basted for 1  1/2 hrs it was so quiet, still, Peacefull and slightly cool perfect to baste.  In the Avo I did another hour and quit was about 1/2 basted.  I baste about every 6 inches so there is roughly 4inchs with no stitches, this is a lot of basting but it will stay like this for 10 years and still be OK ready for some one to quilt by hand or machine.  12am 9th Jan 2017 finished basting the quilt, it took a good 5 hrs to baste it.

Sara's quilt thread basted ready for quilting.

Now the fun begins quilting the top. I have 12 days still to work on Sara’s quilt.

OK an Update for Margaret who wanted a close ups of those tiny Pieces I appliquéd last night

Hi Margaret now sure if you can see how Ive stitched it but this is the best shot up close I could get !!!!!!

Hi Margaret hope this photo helps. back ground fabric is brocade silk difficult to stitch through as it is so thick and tightly woven. I use a number 12 needle and bottom line thread to make it a little easier to push through the fabric.  pale pink silk is a very very light weight silk that I have added iron-on-washaway freezer paper to  give it some body and hopefully will not wear out to quickly. Pieces are 1 1/2 inchs long and 1/4 wide at the widest point.  I found it fiddly to get those fine tapped points.

I was looking for something and found this panel instead and had to ahng it, more circles LOL When I die people will think of circles

Some times we find treasures made by another in the most unexpected places. Last week this embroidery came in to the shop, they had priced it for a couple of dollars, I picked the frame up to turn it around for the shoppes to see and realised it was needle work, the more I looked the more I saw. The dark waves are made from fine leather and I think most likely was gold but the weather up here is cruel to any thing leather and it is mouldy and now dark brown, I will see what i can do to restore it????? Frame is covered in dust and so is the cloth so IP will cover it with a fine gauze and try vacuum cleaning it first. It was hung this way

See how the threads are against the light and it looks dull!!!!!

Now I thought Im sure it should be hung the other way up??????

Walla!!!!! for years it must have been hung the other way!!!!!! Now we have a land scape with hills and then floating clouds or waves????? All the threads stand alone now and its magical.

Now to spend a few days cleaning it up, move the hanging wire so it hangs this way up and see what a beauty she is????

30th Nov 2016 Working on my lovely Gollies and colour in my garden this morning.

Oh gosh how did it get to Dec tomorrow???????

This week I have been working on my darling golly dolls, so many happy child hood memories have been woken.  I hope they are giving many of you those same lovely memories.

I decided to choose black as my sashings as there was so much cream calico around my little friends.

I decided to choose black as my sashings as there was so much cream calico around my little friends.  I then thought they look so lonely they need some thing? Im very partial to circles so I sat down one evening and cut and cut out circles, Hubby had just rediscover some rolls of 1/4 inch rainbow bias that I had bought in Japan about 8 years ago in the heating box on the week-end when he was cleaning it out and this was perfect for the ballon strings effect.

Im not going to add Mummer Golly that I made here as it did not balance and I wanted to use every one of these a dorable blocks, I will make a cover for the quilt to go in and use Mumma on the cover. So Im leaving the top centre black black and will fill it with Balloons.

Quilt needs to be quiet a bit wider so will make a 4 1/2 inch border this will add another 8inchs enough to be practical. I wanted some thing in yellow and found this fabiric from around 1970!!!!! Haven't a clue were it came from to long ago LOL

24th Nov 2016 Oh Me oh My!!!!!!!

These are sososososo adorable. I made the large one of the mum and then

These are sososososo adorable. I made the large one of the mum and then 11 other quilters from ALL over OZ made one darling block each month for 11 months for me. How lucky I am to have these darling adorable blocks.  A BIG THANK you to all who made them. I will add your names here when I copy them all off the blocks.   OH so many memories when I read your names when I was opening the blocks.

After saying I had nothing to show !!!!!!!!

Look what I just came across?????  Hubby has just emptied a small storage area and there were 5 large plastic boxes of my gear in there, first box I have opened had these adorable blocks in them, HOW could I have missed placed these adorable blocks but worse still why did I not make them in to a quilt when they all arrived back after 12 months going from quilter to quilter all around OZ??????  Did I start work full time, was I sick, did Xmas New Year and life just happen?????  What ever happened Im so glad to find them again and just hope I make a quilt this time, I will use black or a bright pink to join them all together. My favourite doll as a child was my Gollywog.  I grew up in NZ and my play mates before I went to school were Maori children so my favourite doll had to looked just like them.  If any of you see these blocks here it would be lovely to hear from you after 8 years HUGS Glenda??????

The first of many that came in to the garden 4 weeks ago. It was so big and incredibly beautiful and so docile I was able to take many photos of it.

Its hard to remember that there are only weeks of 2016 left were did 2016 go to?????

I have been off line the last few weeks due to flu but I hope Im on track again now?

One thing that has been wonderful is my iPad I have been able to visit Houston Quilt Show and many wonderful blogs to help past the hours in bed.  How wonderful to have this tool at our finger tips.

Penny Rugs

When I was very small I remember my Grandmother sewing coloured fabric to an old grey army blanket of my Grandfathers what I remember the most was all the bright colours, while she sewed she would thread some thick thread on to a darning needle and give me her BIG tin button box and I would make my self  a necklace from the buttons while she sewed.  Her button tin was full of glass and crystal buttons it was like a jewel box to me; the  below started from those memories.

It started with a WW11 grey army blanket that came my way about 3 months ago and it must have made me thing of Penny Rugs and stirred old memories.

I thought about the shape I was working on and it did not make me excited LOL

I was not happy with the shape of the blanket for the design I had been thinking of, so out came the scissors and I made a huge circle and started adding little circles.

My second lot of circles are all ready to be sewn on each circles has a inner circle which I have blanket stitched on in bright contrasting DMC threads using mostly 6 strands.  I will do the same for the outer circles.

To keep the circles in place Im adding double sided tape which is a commercial one so quiet thick. It is sticky enough to hold them in place so they don't blow away and when I finally sew them down they will add a little 3D to the circles.

5th Oct 2016 Mens Tie shoulder bag finished.

Well its all most a month since I blogged, some times life gets in the way.

I cut my leg in June with a sharp garden saw and had 14 stitches unfortunately  soil bacteria started to grow in there and I have had a very sore leg ever since and have had to dress it every day. They have finally found out what it is after been on so many different antibiotics. Some of the soil bacteria disease where we live can not be cured but this one can but it can take between 4 months and a year to kill it, so I have to take two different antibiotics till it is killed. It’s been so bad the last month I have not blogged, but feeling a little better the last week so I’m hoping to do my blog today.

In my last blog I left off where I was near the end of piecing my bag were I use men’s ties as the gusset.

Bag finally sewn together and now waiting for finishing off

I have found it a good idea to add large buttons at the bottom of the bag to stop the wear on the silk and it also keeps the bag much cleaner.

Now we see what the bag will look like when used. It has to have the lace stitiched down now and reinforcing

Now we see what the bag will look like when used. It has to have the lace I at t.he back stitched down now and reinforcing where the ties leave the bag.  These bags get used for many things and I know of one that carries lecture notes plus computer to Uni and this area showed up as a week spot.

An old ladies stainless steel watch strap

This morning I was doing some repair and cleaning  of jewellery for the shop An old ladies stainless steel watch strap was amongst the bits and pieces and a light bulb moment happened; these straps would be perfect for my weak spot on the bag and look so good.  So I have pulled it to pieces cleaned it and now it is ready to use. .

How strong this will be????? and how attractive. It will take me a while to sew on stitch by stitch but well worth the time and effort.

My main project the last 3 months is sashiko quilting a 21st birthday quilt for a special person who came in to our life a few years ago. I’ve called it Shields and Swords.  Blocks are made up of shields and I want to sashiko swords around the borders.  He is in the army and hopefully he will like it?  It is a very strong colour quilt.

7th Sept 2016 Another shoulder mens tie gusset bag.

How do Wednesdays sneak up on me?  I think Im on track and then I find it is Wednesday and I’m not ready.  Wednesday is the day I like to have for my email, reading other quilters blogs and looking at quilts that I wish I had the time to make LOL.  This week I have spent most of my sewing  time on my Mens Tie gusset bag which I showed the start of last week.

Draft of the shape I use to make these Tie bags

Draft of the shape I use to make these Tie bags. This is for Mini.

This is were I left off last week

Front and back of the bag Im working on. Today I found two ties I may be able to use for the gusset.

Front and back of the bag Im working on. Back still needs two more or three logcabins and the lace need to be sewn down but I will leave that till last so the lace stays fresh. Today I found two ties I may be able to use for the gusset.

Back of bag finally complet;y covered with logcabin blocks I needed 15 all up to do this plus some strips to fill in some small holes.

Front and back ready for the bias binding around the edges. I made some up from the same material as I used on the front of bag.

Bias pinned ready for the sewing machine, I cut the bias at 2inch and then iron in 1/2 this gives a better strength for sewing in the gusset.

Binding sewn on and two ties waiting to be sewn together by machine.

Binding sewn and now turned over the edges and waiting to be stitched down by hand, I hand stitch this down to give a nice clean look.   Two mens ties waiting to be sewn together by machine for the gusset.

Ties are great to use for gussets but make sure you use ties that are roughly the same shape and size or they will not work.  you can use silk or poly it does not mater but I have found that poly wear better, I now add buttons on the very bottom of bag where the ties are the widest and they take the wear not the ties.  This is were the bag sits when put down.

Gusset pinned to neck of bag this is cut at 3inchs then folded as it gives a nicer look been a little deeper.

Jioned ties make the gusset for this bag, I have chosen and pink and dark brown this ties in with the back and front. Gusset is not attaches just showing you what it will look like, I have since echo quited the ties by machine and now sewing the gusset on by hand. A slow job but enjoyable when listening to a book.

Hopefully I will complete the front of the bag as I have done on the back by next week and can share it in photos with you.

I was looking for some thing and found this photo instead of my antique Crazy quilt I bought online from the USA  around 20 years ago it was a UFO the quilter who must have started it around the 1930’s ( the backing of the blocks are all flour bags) only completed the 6 panels and many of the silks have completely fallen apart and I have been replacing them.  I only have one panel to complete but I must have put it away yet again and forgotten about it. I must see if I can find it and finish that panel LOL

My antique Crazy Quilt

6 panels of my 1930’s antique Crazy Quilt  I love repairing this quilt as it is such fun looking at all the lovely fabrics and dreaming about what they were used for in the original quilters family life.

Not a lot in the garden to share, I have a sore leg so have not spent many hrs in it this week.  But took these couple of photos this morning.

A native orchid; it is so fragile and delicate, plus has such a lovely gentle perfume but sadly only lasts a couple of days in full flower. we are luckly to have in in our garden.

I woke up to a beautiful morning yesterday, stunning clouds and bright shinny greens as far as I could see.

Some times we see some thing that inspires us were others will discard it, my cousin Jeanette is great at this and inspired me to look at things twice before walking on or throwing away from when I was a teenager.

Last week it was a lace cotton top that came in to the shop, the top part was badly soiled but the lace was great so I said tot he girls I would turn the lace in to a bag!!!!!!  Blank looks but I will show them on Tuesday what I did over the week with that lace and I hope I can show you also so you can follow me in photos.

Where it all started the top that was badly stained but the lace was OK just needed a wee trim to tidy it up.

Only a little mending to show  this week, Ive been away staying with family at the beach, we had fantastic days of sunshine, warmth; beaches and  rivers to walk beside and special time with family.  Now its back to the grind of cleaning the pavers and paving walls of the mould.  We came home to  a lovely surprise our DGS had been looking after the home for us had water blasted the whole of the front patio for us: its a huge job.  what a wonderful home coming that was.

Lovely golden beaches as far as the eye can see.

Quilty365 Circles 10th August 2016

First I apologise to those messages I have not answered over the last week. I cut my leg 7 weeks ago it healed nicely no problems then 10 days ago it started to break out and I have been on antibiotics since, an abscess has built up under the skin and it is taking ages to heal, but finally it is healing but I have not felt like doing any thing much. So today just going to add a blog I wrote for my quilt365 Circles last weekend. this morning I have been sitting hemming and appliquéing my Quilty365 Circles, I pick these up when I have no energy to do any thing else, they are very soothing and relaxing no need to think at all LOL

Below was written on the 7th.

Im still working on my lovely wee circles but I keep forgetting to join in at the beginning of the month and then its to late to join in LOL

My back ground fabric is a lovely hand woven antique silk, sadly it frays some thing terrible but Im managing to control it to this stage, Im glad Im making 3 small wall quilts though not one large one.

I finished sashiko quilting this wee quilt during the week one down 3 to go LOL

My first 90 wee blocks but there are 121 circles here.  I have finished sashiko quilting this wee quilt one down 3 to go LOL

Last month I finished sewing my next 90 wee squares together now I need to fins time to sandwich them in to my next wee quilt so I can sashiko quilt it.  There are 122 circles here so thats 243 circles so far completed.

My first 30 tiny squares with there circles for my last wall quilt.

My first 37 tiny squares with there circles for my 3rd and final wall quilt.

Box of circles cut out waiting to be hemed then applqiued on to the tiny squares.

This was one of the first quilts I made. I was living in PNG. I did not know much about quilting then so did not add much of it too this quilt,  it has been given back to me to finish the binding I did not realise Id never finished it, I ended up adding the out side yellow border to make it a little bigger and now hand quilting around the circles.

All though its OK there is nothing to keep you looking

All though I like this quilt there is nothing to keep you looking so Im working on adding these floating circles.

My thanks go to Karen for introducing me to this wonderful group, and to Audrey for starting it. I have loved every moment of it so far.

My garden is drowning but growing like a jungle in all the constant rain we have had the last year,  it is slowly blocking out the sun so we will have to do a good cull soon to let the light back in, I took these photos this morning and it shows how covered in we are now????

I’ve washed and just finished unpicking a beautiful Ikat cotton Kimono which I want to use on the backing of my Japanese quilt.  this is a hand reset pattern using rice glue then dipped in to indigo dye baths.  origianlly it was a 11 metre long bolt of fabric woven at 14inch wide only.  Im going to try sewing it all back together again? then I will have the pattern flowing for the backing, it is such beautiful fabric and design it will be worth all the time spent doing this.

Trying to work out were the original fabric was cut and sew it all back together the design will flow when I sew it in to the backing for a quilt.

WOW or WIP’s with Esther 20th Aug 2016

I have almost finished quilting my Friendship quilt so have started another quilt.

I have almost finished quilting my Friendship quilt so have started another quilt.  I did not design this heart and stars block a lady in USA showed me what she was doing and I drafted this up from her block. So if any one knows who the designer is I would like to credit it to her.

I made this quilt with a lady in USA

I made this quilt with a lady online  in the USA  her husband was very ill and we shared our progress as we made these blocks it gave her some one to talk to out side the family.

This block is made up of 5 pieces plus the centre star. I used silk for most of the stars and some yellow cotton most of the pieces around the star are Japanes fabrics cottons mostly. these are ironed on to a fabric that would have been made it to Japanese mens PJ's. It is 100% cotton. I quilted this square last night, some seams are difficult because of the the iron on fusing.

I spent the week making these wee blocks to be able to finish my Florence Petro quilt. I really like this form of appliqué as you can have fun with thread adding extra colour to your tiny pieces.  If you zoom in you can see what I mean.

Hubby has just bought an old 4 piece dinner set, after years of dinner sets with flowers he has one with birds LOL but there are flowers around the edges for me LOL

We have had heavy heavy rain and days of it this week and we and every thing else looks very dismal.   Thank goodness we have a lovely dry home now after 20 years of digging run offs putting in drainage underground and adding good down pipes so the water is controlled unless we have torrential rain which we had on Mon and Tues and the gutters just flowed over. My garden looks so dismal and nothing interesting to show except these.

Calico Garden WOW 13th Aug 2016

This week flew by as usual but some how I only remember the weekend it went so quickly. I have mostly been working on my quilting of my friendship quilt but Hubby put up two of the big tables on the veranda for me, put two of these together and I have a table big enough to put a queen-size quilt so its a wonderful space to work on.  I put my Florence Petro quilt on it I made this years ago but ran in to a problem which I did not know how to solve.

My adaptation of Florence Petro quilt

My adaptation of Florence Petro quilt Calico Garden around 1930.  These were all the tiny flower blocks she made out of scraps here blocks were only 3 1/2 inches mine are 6inches.  Florence used beige colours in her 9 patches and beige border, mine is a little bright  compared to hers LOL   My borders are not attached I ran in to a problem on the bottom border. To see the original design and purchase the pattern you can see it here.

Close up of the tiny blocks. I used iron-on-fusing method then button hole stitched around them all. finally added embroidery to them.
