Many years ago when when I use to visit Japan you were often given a gift of a square of silk fabric that I thought were scarfs; but were really used to wrap a gift up in. I ended up with about 20 plus of these and recently when cleaning up I decided to pass them on, then two weekends ago I saw how to make these insert pouches and now Im turning those scarfs in to lovely little pouches LOL

Take an old scarf and turn it in to an insert pouch. First cut the scarf in 1/2 . This is a a metre square silk scarf, you could use any fabric.

Fold back sides of fabric together and sew a 1/4 inch seam where the join is; this will end up the top of the pouch and by sewing here now it adds strength to that edge.
fold top layer of fabric back pick up both sides of the fabric where the seam and pull up to 2inchs from top edge of back fabric
Fold top layer of fabric back over the fabric you pulled up and level with back fabric you now should have 4 layers of fabric mostly with just two layers at the top2 inchs right hand side .
Showing you the left hand end you should have two double folds here.
If I fold the top edge back you can see that seam you just pulled up. Now we are going to sew these raw edges we have just made together there are 4 layers.
Pin both sides and sew these seams. You can see that double fold at the bottom of this photo still.
Pin other side and sew. Make sure you do a back stitch at the start of your seam and end of seam.
Now this is the magical part put you hand inside and turn inside out and you have a pouch; no seams any where showing a very very neat pouch and made in about 10 to 15mins max once you work out how to make it. I must admit it took me ages to get my head around it at first. I saw it on The Quilt Show over the free week-end and just wish I could remember who showed us how to make it. If any one else saw this would they let me know who it was so I can credit it as theirs.
the silk is lovely and I bet it is great to think of a use for them instead of just stored away.
What a lovely idea for using those silk scarves, and it’s such a sweet pouch. Thank you for the tutorial, Glenda.
