WOW or WIPs with Esther 11th April 2018.

Nearly 1/2 way in to April!  A Head cold and the Commonwealth Games has had me sitting down a lot more than normal so I have been doing more hand quilting the last  week than I have been doing of  late.

I managed to get all my stems appliquéd down by machine this week.

Hhgvb

Was so happy to finish machine appliqueing those stems down I kept worrying I would loose some of them before Id machined them down.  Thats the story of my life having to put part finished blocks away and then loosing pieces and not having any more fabric?   So now I have all the leaves ironed down also, so I can not loose those LOL  Now to machine applqiue them down, I did buy some thread online to do this but it is tooooo dark, thats the trouble buying online, it looked a lot lighter than it is.  So will ahve to wait and see if I can buy some next time I’m in the city?

Jjklkk

Placed my centres to get a feel of the design.

Jhggfv

When I add the borders around these centres I will add the extra leaves to give the pattern this circle look of the leaves.  For now it has to sit waiting for the aqua thread I need.

Ikjnnn

Ive set up my Janome just so I can work on my Red and Green when ever I can get the time.  Its sitting on a glass computer desk but works perfectly for a portable table for the Janome.

I completed my first 16 Tiny houses this week, Ive taken a break from my Tiny houses to work on my Red and Green Quilt, but have been forced to hand quilt with a head cold and throat infection

Jhhhb

Loved making these 3inch square Tiny houses Thanks Nancy LOL  Yes they really are only 3inches square when finsihed!!!!!!

Jhbb

Close to finishing

Mjhgv

First 16 completed!

Hggf

I wanted a light background for my Tiny houses but it just did not jell.

Inbetween all this happening this week I came across a huge box of my mums number 5DMC threads, there were over 150 in the box!!!!  My brother (bless him) sent them to me when she died over 10 years ago and they ahve been in storage as I was not using threads this thick back then. I spent an evening sorting them, two boxes are threads that have never been used!!!!

Jhhgg

I will use these lovely lovely threads when doing sashiko quilting. what a gift my mum just gave me.  Every time I use them she will be beside me.  I wonder what else is in the attic from her????

Kkkk

To make my joining strips and 1/2 inch corner stones???  I cut a 3 1/2 inch strip of dark mauve fabric joined the light mauve to it, cut the light mauve back to 3/4 of an inch then cut across this every 1inch to give me the perfect strips for those 1/2 inch corner stones ! Nancy reminded me to do it this way, was so quick and much more accurate.

Putting these tiny houses together.

Jhbvvo

First two rows joined

Hhgvv

Slowly the block grows!

Jhgvv

Nearly there, it took ages as I have used silk fabrics for these joining borders???? and I have to pin each strip 4 times to stop the fabrics sliding and shifting?  Yep I do it the hard way some times but I had the fabric and did not want to buy any more fabric.

Hhbb

One completed block of Tiny houses Thank you Tiffany.  Click on Tiffanys name to see other Tiny houses!

Kjjhbn

MY Bernina set up with lots of tin6 fabric scraps and some not so small so I can sew any time I want to make a Tiny house, I have my cutting mat one side and iron the other side of me as I’m constantly pressing and cutting

Kjhg

Hand quilting an antique very fine woven woollen fabric panel.

Jhbbb

I’m using a thick synthetic wadding to get a deep 3D effect on th falcons and the cloud shapes. But the backing was a big mistake, it’s 100% cotton but a kimono lining and is so tightly woven that I can not take a quilting stitch as the needle pings back out of the backing fabric so I’m haveing to do what my mum called the push and poke stitch that one does when doing tapestry,  So I rescued her Fanny hoop which I’ve never used and I’m 1/2 way through quilting this panel now.

Kmn

Mums Fanny hoop, these have been around for a long long time and are still made, they are quick and easy to use and free up both hands to be able to sew with.

Jhhbbb

Cobble stones been put down to stop slipping on the smooth concrete in the long wet seasons.

Last of these heliconia for this flowering.

love those tiny little houses – 3 inches! wow you have got talent!! I love that hoop that you have and the box of threads that had been your mothers that is just so nice that you found what you had put away. I’m so glad you have them I think we all love to still have our mom’s nearby after they are actually gone. I do not have anything like that but I keep her photo near by so I can see it always

Hi there Marita, thanks so much for dropping in to say hello. Finally the rain has stopped and I hope you snow has too. I ahve a friend who lives in Minnesota and its still snowing there????? I have stopped working on my wee houses as I wanted to finish my Red and Black sample quilt top this week. Ive just managed to finish sewing it all together today and hopefully will finish the applqiue tonight. SO another UFO finsihed this year?????? Cheers Glenda

How nice to have those stems appliqued. Having the right thread color makes a big difference. It’s hard to wait sometimes. Love those tiny houses. And they are definitely tiny! Your garden always has some pretty colors and textures.

Hi Kyle, thanks for calling, Ive had a constructive week finsihing a 15 year old UFO finally LOL Did you see that house 1 1/2 inches inch square!!!! Hard to believe that she made it !!!!! I have trouble making mine at 3 inches LOL Out wet season has left us at last and it is so nice to wake up to the sun and not the rain. Now which UFO do I work on LOL Cheers Glenda

  4. Oh, wow, Glenda! I love your tiny houses, such a happy party of color there, and your applique is just absolutely STUNNING!!! What brand of thread do you prefer for your machine applique? Several manufacturers have thread charts you can purchase inexpensively that have the actual thread on them for perfect color matching. It’s great for online thread shopping. I have them for Kona Solid fabric as well. How wonderful that you will be sewing with your mom’s thread. I love her lap hoop, too — I have something similar from the Grace company, except mine is square.

  5. Oh, wow, Glenda! I love your tiny houses. Thanks for the link to Tiffany’s …… o oh! Did you see Paula’s PDF for even smaller houses? I stopped at that point, no, just can’t go there! Serious cute!!!!
How wonderful to have all those lovely threads from your mum, and to be able to use them too! My mum embroidered when she was young but has sight problems now and has turned to knitting. But I was lucky enough to “inherit” three boxes of sewing threads from a lady who knew I stitched so much!
Tee hee, you are awful! I never heard anyone call a stitching frame that!
Love the falcon piece, it’s looking great!
The cobbles sound a good idea, we have a similar problem in our garden when it rains for a long time ….. it’s hard to know the best solution ….. hope it works for you.
    Hugs,
    Barbara xx

Just had to give a quick reply I’m still laughing, it’s a very old term, Fanny hoop, mine is written on the pamphlet called a Fanny hoop LOL. Type it in your search engine .
      I’m still laughing. .

    • glenda says:

Hi Barbara LOL. Now I will tell you where they think the name Fanny hoop came from? Anglosaxon word for Swamp or marsh was Fenn, so the people who lived there were called Fenn who would of used the reeds to make hoops!!!they were called Fenn people which became Fanny? Interesting thing is now Fanny in the UK means female vigina and in the USA bottom!!! We learn a little every day? Have had a good week sewing this week and having fun. Cheers Glenda.
