WOW or WIP’s with Esther. 17th July 2019

This blog is about how I started and finished Part 6 of HOTYH. Doing the applique with iron on fussing, it’s a tutorial in photos for any one new to it?  I hope it will help some one?

K

First I cut and pasted a full pattern and started with my frames.  All my fabric all ready has iron on fussing behind it.

N

Step 2 this small circles I’m using silks for this part!

N

Circles are all from the same fabric but the light places tricks with silk fabrics and makes them all look different.

G

Thought about butterflies but could not find the right ones?

N

Then choose some very tiny Chines silk embroidery yellow flowers with blue satin backing and love them.  My DGS’s partner gav3 the fabric to me how sweet is that?

N

Two completed Frames.

N

I even thought of antique buttons in my frames?  But they were two dark and not round?

G

Next was to make my Catus plants, I was thinking rust or orange tones? But no these fabrics jumped out at me ?

M

Added some bright green flowers picking through the catus. On to  some stems each side of the catus, again not my choice in colour but the blue leaves called out loudly to me?

H

Two toned star flowers just fitted there so perfectly.

H

Placed my diamonds in to get my true felling of the block ?  I’m so happy with how it grew, by this time it’s midnight but I cannot stop?

H

So two flower heads added for effect

H

Then two more?

B

A few tiny leaves this is allbeen ironed on to Teflon sheets.

B

My first bird is made and added,  my blue birds we’re going to be delft blue???

H

My second bird is made and added, again not a delft blue LOL. But I love her.

G

These wee birds are adorable, how much fun I have had with this beautiful block Esther, thank you so much.

B

Finally finished at 1.45am?!

H

Next day I placed all the pieces on to a felt board till I would need them?

G

Finally What my Part 6 will look like on my Hold On To Your Heart quilt when I get around to appliqueing all of them to my centre of HOTYH?

Hello??? Any one reach this far.   LOL

During the week I was given some fabric in a bag and told, not sure if you can use this?   I could not wait to get back home and see what was in there, it’s such a lucky dip when friends do this.  Well I sure struck it lucky,  there were two large pieces of flannel but first all these fabrics are over 50 years old and plus, have been put away in a cupboard all that time?   2 metres of thin cotton that looks like it may have been 1930s child’s fabric.

Hh

Such adorable fabric, have placed a machine bobbin on it so you can see how small the little creatures are.

Then there were two pieces of tartan fabric?

Red and green tartan

Red and green tartan, it is a heavy weave wool and would be soooo warm to wear.  It’s a double weave and there is 6 metres .  Lots of moth holes on the edges were it had been folded but as it’s a heavy weight wool it will not matter.

Soft green and blue with a wee yellow tartan

Soft green and navy blue with a wee narrow yellow strip tartan. This one is a light wool and very soft.  This pieces has no moth holes that I have noticed yet? Double weave also and about 6 metres !   Not sure what I will do with either of the tartans?  But one day I will LOL.

Bag one finished

Bag one finished

Bag two finished also now.

Bag two finished also now.

Only garden matter this week is a large white tailrat we caught as it was getting too friendly and wanting  to come inside!!!  After it ran over Hubbies foot twice he set  the trap?

He was a very viciose fellow!

He was a very viciose fellow!

Notice his long whitetail. He now lives else were?!

thank you for dropping in and making it finally to the end .  Going to link up with Esther’s WOW or WIP’s now.   Hope to see you all again next week. Cheers Glenda

Very nice tutorial, it took some time to prepare it. Something will come along to use the wool with, you certainly won’t use it for clothing in your climate. Happy Stitching!

Hello Gretchen lovely to hear from you. The red and green tartan sure would be perfect for your climate, it’s a heave wool. They lovely light weight wool one would make a lovely soft backing on a quilt? Would be warm and cuddly? Was hoping to start part 7 of Hold On To Your Heart to day but it flew past so quickly, may be tomorrow? Hugs Glenda

such pretty applique – you have such patience with so much prep work – I usually do needle turn because I don’t have the patience for all the prep work. That is a horrible looking rat you have there – can see why it was trapped to move! I guess they are common in your area?

Hi Karen, so nice to stop and say hello to you. I seem to be rushing all the time lately, thank goodness we have not seen the rain for a week but we have had the coldest days in the 23 years we have been here. Usually we have cold days down around 15C which IS cold for here but it’s been 10C every morning this week and below. It’s 11am now and it’s still 12C where it should be 22C . Hope to do some sewing done this morning to cold to go out side. Will do the prep work on Pat 7 of Esther’s BOM. Hugs Glenda.

    Dear Glenda
Those tartan sound like the ones the guys fold, then lie down and wrap it around themselves. Maybe YouTube and see how they do it? Maybe your hubby would not mind being the guinea pig and too boot he will have two outfits for going to the annual Highlands games? Cheeky rat. Glad you caught him and sent him to a new home. Your applique is looking beautiful. Treasures which are gifted to us are so special, we are like kids in a candy shop.

Hi Maggie not sure how you are still finding time to blog you are so busy? So thanks so much for dropping in. These tartans were brought back from Scotland around 1955 1970 when people from NZ and OZ were going over seas doing what was called The GrandTour, visiting England then Europe any one who went to Scotland would bring back one or two kilt lengths (and mohair shawles or scarfesLOL) to make up in to a kilt but many never got around to having the kilts made up or could not find any one who knew how to make a kilt, but kept that precious fabric. Rod has his own kilt which all the boys wore when they married. It’s a lovely deep orange. Ratty Poo will be replaced all most straight away by a jounger rat, they are very territorial and and fight to kill to have their own area. Thank goodness we only have to put up with one at a time. Hugs from very cold Kuranda .

  5. Your appliqué is so beautiful!! I loved watching it come together in this post!

Thanks for the pictorial on HOTYH. I’ve been so busy with life that I have not touched any of Esther’s quilts in months! Birthdays, anniversary, back injury, having to travel for DH cancer appointments (all good), daughters surgery etc etc etc. Oh and of course it is gardening time here. I have one more quilt to finish for s 25th wedding anniversary and then I can get back to my lovely appliqué quilts.
Rats to rats! We are setting out traps also as something has decided to chew on the tomatoes. I know that a rabbit has been by too. We just order a night camera so we can be sure of who the culprit is.
Well back to the daily chores. Take care.
