Rodger the Teddy Bear 24th June 2015

I’m one of those women who has to buy Teddy Bears in Op Shops incase they end up dog chewers!!!   If my grandees ask are there fairies I reply of course.

1980's Teddy bear from Yorkshire UK

Rodger !!! a 1980’s Teddy bear from Yorkshire UK that I just bought at the Opp shop for $1.00.   Sadly we get so many soft toys handed in to the shop, many you can see have been so so loved.  Many are purchased for peoples dogs which hurts me to see that they are going to be chewed up, this is why I brought this chappy home I could not bear the thought of that happening to him.  If there is any one out there who would loveeeee to have him please contact me.

He has the most adorable face, I hope no child is missing him.

A friend of mine was given this 1/2 made wee bag that was to be a tissue box by her friend who’s mum made it,  she showed it to me and I said I would finish it off but as a wee pull string bag not a tissue box.

I added a double thickness 31/2 inch wide strip ran a stitch an inch from the top of one side added two button holes close together  on this area and then added the pull cord through this area.  then stitched this piece to the bag . See below finished project.  Susan was so thrilled and happy when she received it back it was worth all the time I spent on it.

What, no creepy crawlers today? Your echo quilting is beautiful and the lambs are so sweet. And as always, your flowers are beautiful.

    • glenda says:

Hi Gretchen it has been so so wet the poor creepy crawlies are all washed out. Even the flowers are been washed away before they can bloom. Our birds are having a hard time finding food. I did take some photo this morning of some shrubs and trees that are flowering down by the coast it is drier and sunny down there even though it is only a 30 min drive away. Cheers Gelnda

Hi Glenda, I knew I recognised that bear – I’m from Yorkshire too! I’m glad that you rescued Rodger, far too good for a dog chew. If I had youngsters around I’d be first in the queue for him but as I don’t I’ll wait my turn. So glad you’re managing to continue with the hand quilting, I love it too, but find it hard to hold a needle for a long time now. Amazing isn’t it, retired so have the time, no longer have the full ability! Shucks! Back to the machine it is…….love to you , Elaine x

Hello Elaine, how lovely that you would know this dear wee bear and that he comes from where you live I can see him residing in your darling thatched home. All though he is not that small he must be about 18 inchs tall. He is beautifully made and well loved so he would need to have been made of top quality material to last so well for been 35 years old; his wee paws are real leather and so soft and smooth. I have been having a rest from hand quilting, I love curing up in my chair and doing it, but I need to work on a few of my other UFO I would love to finish this year too. Hugs from Australia.

    Hi Glenda

Loving the pull string bag! What a clever idea! Your hand quilted block is gorgeous. I’m so glad you rescued teddy. I have over 100 bears, and love them all. Your little lambs look very jolly and looking great.

    Hugs

    Sue

    • glenda says:

Hello Sue, oh golly gosh 100 teddy Bears, I’m was so happy to read that, its always great to know one is not the only teddy nutter. One day I went to a garage sale and there was this lovely much loved Teddy Bear been dragged through the mud and wet grass by one leg by a young girl around 4 then she chucked it down under one of the tables I picked it up and gave it to the mum who said, “oh it’s not hers its for sale” I was horrified, one that she would let her child ruin something that was not hers and two that she was unfazed by what had happened. When the child saw that I had it in my arms she wanted it again of course. I quickly went over and paid for it and left???? I did find some one to love it and it is still been cuddled each night in bed. Take care thinking of you. Glenda

  4. Anne Marieke says:

So glad you rescued Roger! He is ever so cute.
I hope you find him a new home soon. Although he would be very happy living with you too. The little grandies could look after him.

    Your little lambs are adorable.

    Hugs,
    Anne Marieke

    • glenda says:

Hi Anne Marieke, I called him Rodger as he reminded me of a Teddy Bear fighter pilot for some reason. may be it is the soft brown leather paws, he just needs a long scarf tied around his neck, which I will ale for him LOL. My hose is full of soft toys that the grandies play with and they have so so many in or on their beds too. It rather difficult for them to find enough space to lie down when they go to bed LOL. Hugs Glenda

  5. Plum Cox says:

    Cute bear, cute lambs too!
Hope that you get another couple of dry days again soon!
    xx

    • glenda says:

Hi Plum, we really need at least 2 months of sun to dry the place out and kill some of the bacteria that is every where, youngest son was cleaning the kitchen bench on Sunday and was bitten by a tiny hour spider on his index finger, within a day it was twice the size and on Monday afternoon he was antibiotics, it has just started to respond tot eh antibiotics and has been so painful. Usually they don’t get infected like this but it is so damp even the tiniest cut becomes infected so we have to be so careful. Hows the building coming on? not sure how you are doing so much sewing with all that going on. Hugs Glenda

  6. Karen says:

nice rescue teddy! I’m so glad that you had two dry days to enjoy that must have been like heaven for you. cute bag that you made also.

    • glenda says:

Hi Karen, thanks for dropping in. Rodger is sitting in my old fashion wooden highchair that I keep at the breakfast bar for when the grandees come up. He looks quiet comfortable there LOL. I went for my first walk along the beach this morning after 3 months of not going, I will just have to get back in to the habbit it does the soul so much good. Cheers Glenda

  7. Julie Griswold says:

Hi Glenda, Julie here. Not much sewing going on around here–just love your block. But can’t imagine the patience of time to sit still and make all those little stitches. The teddy bear sure looks like a “keeper”. I used to make bears but they were all given away as gifts–don’t have even one that I made in the house. Thank you so much for your kind words about my tie pillows. I have also made purses out of ties. Mainly small projects but I have seen quilts made from ties as well. Maybe one of these days I will attempt a quilt( must be the reason that I have collected ties for years).

Take care, rest your hands, stay dry and here’s to many more UFO’s. Although, the new buzz phrase is “Working on my PHD”— projects half done. LOL

    Julie

    • glenda says:

OH Julie I love the “Working on my PHD” I will have to use that one in the future much more fun than UFO’s. LOL I have been working on herringbone stitching around my Crazy Patches the last two days, I do it while watching DVD’s, I listen more than watch them, it takes two DVDs to embroider one crazy block normally???? SO thats around 3 1/2 hrs plus !!!! I do my quilting in the evenings while listening to a DVD or a TV programme, but as I said I listen to them not watch. I’m not good at just sitting and quilting I start to think of things that need doing and don’t relax. When I lived in PNG I made bears also we were posted to Sault Set Marie in Canada for 4 months around 20 years ago, and there were lots of fur coats for sale in the Opp Shops and I bought around 5 or 6 and used them to make my bears and they were so lovely to cuddle, like you I don’t have one my self. LOL. Esther makes the most delightful Teddy Bears too. Hugs Glenda

  8. Esther Aliu says:

What a handsome bear! Glenda I used to do this same thing – until my family stopped me 🙁 I just can’t stand seeing beautifully made bears like this one chucked away or dumped in op shops because they very often end up on dog beds – it breaks my heart. Roger looks like a proper bear that has a lot of love left in him, I hope to goes to someone who’ll take care of him. I think its so good of you to be a Teddy Rescuer!

Love your hand quilting and your lambs are coming along so nicely too. Your patio is where I want to be right now, especially with your boxes in bloom. I’m rugged up in Melbourne. But I’m not complaining – it’s good quilting weather!

    • glenda says:

Hi Esther I’m so glad you feel the same and there are lots of other people out there that feel the same about Teddies as I do LOL My eldest DGD 17 wants to claim Rodger, I’m so surprised as I thought she would not be in to Teddy Bears any more.
Normally it is quiet cool up here this time of the year but it is still quiet mild but I guess it is because we are still having so much rain around. July and August are our coolest months.
I’m back making little pieces of LE again started tonight, making some fairies for that border. Hugs Glenda
