Ufosin2017 End of March

I’ve been in bed but on the mend but did not blog on Wednesday so I’m adding my end of the month blog I made to link with Meredithe and share what I’ve been doing on my 17 UFO’s I want to work on this year.  Happy stitching every one Glenda

Thank you Meredithe for this strong motivation to work on my Ufosin2017.

I’m make progress but much slower this month. Its been a frustrating month of not been able to find pieces I needed to work on  the projects I choose for my next 21 days.  I finally after looking for weeks for my cut out circles for my ANZ quilt top I remade another 30 odd new ones and now that project is were I wanted to be before my 21 days were up, I just scrapped in on that one LOL

Ive just completed the last 3 rows and joined them to the main part of the quilt, just need to add the two side red strips and the top is finished then I have the fun of adding appliqué to it.

This fabric was heavily embossed with silver thread so I have a high contrast from the front of fabric to the back fabric.  It is from a old kimono and is woven design with wool and silver threads.   not stamped.

All circles ironed down waiting for them to be appliquéd on, I started appliquéing them but had terrible trouble with thread breakage, I thought it was the machine so stopped then realised it was rotten cotton thread not the machine. ??????  Best thing about this problem I now realise I should have added wadding behind these circles  to give me a more 3 D effect.

Ive also been working on adding the binding to Joshua's quilt, I have 3/4 of the binding sewn on and 1/4 of it turned over and hand stitched down.

Ive also been working on adding the binding to Joshua’s quilt,, which is now completed and the quilt is off to its new owner.

I so enjoyed doing this quilt by hand saskiko quilting.  My DDIL Is going back to Japan this month and is bringing me back sashiko needles so I’m over the moon, funny how a needle gift thrills me more now  than jewellery LOL.  I worked on this  all day one day for 12 hrs and the next day my lower arm was so sore LOL  So I have learnt to only do several hrs a day hand quilting now LOL

Creppy crawlies have not eatten them so we still ahve them in the garden.

    • glenda says:

Hi Deb since I decided to join Meredeth’s Ufosin2107 I have been much more controlled with what I’m working on in my sewing, hence 3 finished quilts so far this year LOL Instead of none !!!!! Cheers Glenda

  5. Angie says:

What a busy month you’ve had! Joshua’s quilt is wonderful – what a unique idea! Fun to see critters and flowers from your garden!

    • glenda says:

Hi Anglie, its been a frustrating month as I things cropped up to stop me working on so many projects I wanted to work on, but finally solved most of them, if I had not started two new BOM’s this year LOL but I’m have a lot of fun. I’m just so happy that I have finished 3 quilts so far so thats a Huge plus LOL Cheers Glenda

  6. Meredithe says:

You’ve had such a busy month, Glenda! Congrats on finishing Joshua’s quilt – he must be delighted. Don’t you hate it when you can’t find what you’re looking for – and you KNOW it’s there!! Circles are looking good on that quilt. Hope you’re having a better time sewing them down.

    • glenda says:

Thanks for dropping in Meredithe, I’m going to add a sheet of pellon behind them for stabilising and to add some depth so it’s going to work out better than it would have visually any way LOL Also been watching a lot of old The Quilt Show DVD’s I have and realise I need to have cotton in the bobbin if I’m using a fine bottom line thread on top. Machine applqiue is all new to me after 20 odd years hand appliquéing LOL Joshua’s quilt is arriving in Nossa today then will be drycleaned and given to him???? I’m spending my time at present doing some more on a 1930 Grandmothers Garden quilt the edges were never finished and it was never quilted but was basted ready to quilt, and sashiko quilting my modern Bargello quilt, strong contrasts but great for the hands and mind LOL 1930’s quilt I’m using a fine 11 needle and the sashiko quilting a crow barLOL well it feels like a crowbar it is 3inchs long and about a size 6!!!!! I’m using the sashiko thimble from Japan which you place inside your palm at the base of your middle finger and push the needle through with your palm rather than rock and push and pull through with your fingers Cheers Glenda

  7. Lynette says:

Whoa! You got a lot done in March! Love your sashiko quilting work. I see your reply in comments talking about the palm thimble and that different approach. Is it hard to get used to?

    • glenda says:

Hi Lynette sorry Ive been so long in replying have not been so well but feeling better . I thought it would be hard to get use to but slipped in to the rhythm very quickly. much quicker than the traditional english and USA rocking style of quilting with a tiny needle, may be because I wanted so much to keep quilting by hand I picked it up so quickly plus I had seen it been done a lot on videos I’d watched, it is NOTHING like our traditional quilting, you use a needle about 2 1/2 to 3 inchs long thimble is at the base of your middle finger with the disk lying down in to your palm not up in to your finger and you push with your right hand and rock the fabric up and down with your left hand!!!!!! watch lots of video’s on it Lynette, I can quilt for hours doing it this way. Now teaching my self to do it with a finer needle and smaller stitches ???? I have some real sashiko needle arriving any day I will let you know if these are easier to use? Cheers Glenda

  8. Jan says:

Great progress on your UFOs in March!

    • glenda says:

Thanks Jan for dropping in, I’m all jumbled up with my Ufosin2107 I keep running in to snags like not been able to find a piece Ive put away carefully LOl or running out of fusing, stabilising or time LOL So not sure how many I’m behind or may be ahead LOL But I have had some finishes which i was not excepting and I’m having so much fun Cheers Glenda
